LAGADU: Lesbians and Gays of African Descent United


Description: This video is about the organization Lesbians and Gays of African Descent United (LAGADU), taken in the year it was founded. LAGADU was founded in San Diego in 1989. It was the first African-American group to march in San Diego’s Gay Pride Parade. LAGADU was formed by local activist Martie Mackey in 1989 as a way to support and unify her fellow African American LGBT community. The group organized fellowship programs and educational forums that emphasized safe sex and leadership skills. They faced opposition from African American church leaders and their parishioners. Other prominent local figures involved with LAGADU included Cynthia Lawrence-Wallace, Peggy Heathers and Jim Cua (a Japanese-American activist).

Additional Description: Todd F. Stevens became the first openly gay president of the 110-year-old San Diego County Bar Association in 1999, the year he was named Gay Pride Man of the Year. Stevens is a lawyer with Keeney Waite & Stevens and a regular contributor of pro bono legal services for people with HIV/AIDS, for which the California State Bar Association recognized him in 1993. Stevens serves as legal counsel for the Human Dignity Foundation and has served on the boards of the American Civil Liberties Union, the Mayor of San Diego’s LGBT Advisory Board and the San Diego County Bar Foundation. His domestic partner of 16 years is San Diego Superior Court Judge David Rubin.
