Description: This video is about the organization Lesbians and Gays of African Descent United (LAGADU), taken in the year it was founded. LAGADU was founded in San Diego in 1989. It was the first African-American group to march in San Diego’s Gay Pride Parade. LAGADU was formed by local activist Martie Mackey in 1989 as a way to support and unify her fellow African American LGBT community. The group organized fellowship programs and educational forums that emphasized safe sex and leadership skills. They faced opposition from African American church leaders and their parishioners. Other prominent local figures involved with LAGADU included Cynthia Lawrence-Wallace, Peggy Heathers and Jim Cua (a Japanese-American activist).
